Name Designated area type
Definition This element indicates whether the spatial object is a designated site, a designated boundary or a strict protection boundary. The designated boundary or strict protection boundary will always be a multi-polygon.

The concept of a “designated boundary” is introduced to enable countries to report on areas while not classified as protected sites in the traditional sense are nevertheless subject to durable protection of flora and fauna. Such areas could be OECMs.

The concept of a “strict protection boundary” is introduced to enable countries to report the spatial delineation of parts of sites (e.g. zones) that fulfill the requirements for strict protection as defined in the EU Biodiversity Strategy. The "strict protection boundary" is used for statistical purposes only and does not inform about site details such as site name, year of designation, etc. Any area reported as part of a "strict protection boundary" must always also be reported as (part of) a designated site.

Examples of boundaries could be sets of areas under general or strict protection because of the occurrence of a specific habitat type (this could be raised bogs, specific meadow types, old growth forests, etc) or where sets of areas are owned and managed with the purpose of improving conditions for habitat types and species (e.g. owned by certain NGOs or trusts).
Methodology for obtaining data This value is required.

- designatedSite: A site designated by national legislation with the intent to protect fauna, flora, or habitats.

- designated Boundary: A boundary of a group of areas (multi-polygon) which provides adequate and durable protection for fauna, flora, or habitats through national, sectorial, or private statutes. Only one NatDA ID is allocated to the group of areas constituting the designated boundary.

- strictProtectionBoundary: A boundary of a group of areas (multi-polygon) which provides strict protection for fauna, flora, or habitats through national, sectorial, or private statutes. Only one NatDA ID is allocated to the group of areas constituting the strict protection boundary.

In the context of reporting, a boundary will often lack some of the mandatory information required for the reporting of a designated site (e.g. site name).
