Name Designated area type
Definition This element indicates whether the spatial object is a designated site or a designated boundary.

The concept "designated boundary" is conceived with the purpose of providing countries with the opportunity to report information about designated areas that are not protected sites in the classical sense but where the areas are still provided with durable protection for flora and fauna.

Examples of designated boundaries could be sets of areas are under general protection because of the occurrence of a specific habitat type (this could be raised bogs, specific meadow types, etc) or where sets of areas are owned and managed with the purpose of improving conditions for habitat types and species (e.g. owned by certain NGOs).
Methodology for obtaining data This value is required.

- designatedSite: A site designated by national legislation with the intent to protect fauna, flora, and habitats.

- designated Boundary: A boundary of a group of areas (multi-polygon) which provides adequate and durable protection for fauna, flora, or habitats through national, sectorial, or private statutes. Only one NatDA ID is allocated to the group of areas constituting the designated boundary.

- strictProtectionBoundary: A boundary of a group of areas (multi-polygon) which provides strict protection for fauna, flora, or habitats through national, sectorial, or private statutes. Only one NatDA ID is allocated to the group of areas constituting the strict protection boundary.

In the context of reporting, a designated boundary will often lack some of the mandatory information required for the reporting of a designated site.
A designated boundary typically comprises a group of areas for which specific data, such as the officially recorded year when an area became part of the distribution range of a specific species or habitat type, and thereby included within the designated boundary, may not be available.
