Short Description The Nationally designated areas (CDDA) is a European inventory holding information about designated areas and their designation types, which directly or indirectly create protected areas in Eionet partner countries and territories. It is an agreed annual Eionet core data flow maintained by the EEA with support from the ETC/BD. The dataset is used by the EEA and e.g. the UNEP-WCMC for their main assessments, products and services.
Definition The definition of a protected area used for inclusion of sites into the CDDA is the one adopted by IUCN, that is:

A clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.

https://www.iucn.org/theme/protected-areas/about

The definition of a "designated area" within the CDDA is similar but wider. The designation types of the designated areas are grouped according to three categories (A, B and C) in the Designation types registry. The designation type categories clearly reflects the IUCN definition above. More information is available in the Designation types data collection.

In addition to the IUCN "protected area" definition, areas closer to the other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) definition may be included in the CDDA under Designation type category B. The definition adopted by the CBD COP in November 2018 is as follows:

A geographically defined area other than a Protected Area, which is governed and managed in ways that achieve positive and sustained long-term outcomes for the in situ conservation of biodiversity, with associated ecosystem functions and services and where applicable, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic, and other locally relevant values.

The CDDA is the official source of protected area information from European countries to the World Database of Protected Areas, maintained by the UNEP-WCMC.

The CDDA database was formerly known as the "Common Database on Designated Areas”. The building of the database was a common effort between UNEP-WCMC, Council of Europe and EEA. Today the database available from the EEA website holds information from the Eionet partner countries only, hence the name was changed to "Nationally designated areas inventory".
Methodology for obtaining data The CDDA reporting is based on the "Linked approach" and re-uses the INSPIRE Protected Sites dataset. This is done to avoid double reporting for countries implementing the INSPIRE Directive.

The CDDA reporting is divided into two components:
• Type 1 data includes the spatial data, aligned with the INSPIRE Protected Sites specification.
• Type 2 data includes the tabular data.

Both Type 1 and Type 2 data files hold mandatory CDDA information.

More information on the Linked approach and the data components is given in the CDDA reporting guidelines.

If you have any questions about the format and content of the data request please contact the CDDA helpdesk, e-mail: cdda.helpdesk@eionet.europa.eu.
