Definition This element indicates whether the spatial object is a designated site or a designated boundary.

The concept "designated boundary" is conceived with the purpose of providing countries with the opportunity to report information about designated areas that are not protected sites in the classical sense but where the areas are still provided with durable protection for flora and fauna.

Examples of designated boundaries could be sets of areas are under general protection because of the occurrence of a specific habitat type (this could be raised bogs, specific meadow types, etc) or where sets of areas are owned and managed with the purpose of improving conditions for habitat types and species (e.g. owned by certain NGOs).
Methodology for obtaining data This value is required.

- designatedSite: A site designated by national legislation with the intent to protect fauna, flora and habitats.

- designatedBoundary: A boundary of an area (often sets of areas) which provides adequate and durable protection for fauna, flora and habitats through national, sectorial or private statutes. One CDDA ID is allocated to each set of areas constituting the designatedBoundary.

With respect to the reporting, a designated boundary will often not have all the information that is defined as mandatory for the reporting of a designated site. A designated boundary is often a composite site where there may not be an officially recorded Year of when a certain area became part of e.g. the range of a certain species or habitat type and thereby became part of the composite site.
