| Definition | Thinning is applied to a forest stand to reduce the number of individual trees and to provide better growing conditions to the best developed exemplars. In reducing the number of trees, the provided light, water, nutrients and space. Such selective removal of trees not only help to improve the growth rate but also the health condition of the remaining trees. Overcrowded trees are under competitive stress from their neighbors. Thinning can also contribute to increase the resistance of the stand to environmental stress. |
