Definition Species-rich montane, subalpine and low alpine heaths of calcareous soils of the Alps and the Dinarids, dominated by [Erica herbacea] ([Erica carnea]), mostly characteristic of the Austrian northern and southern calcareous Alps, south to the Dolomites and the Karawanken, with [Sesleria albicans], [Arctostaphylos uva-ursi], [Daphne striata], [Globularia cordifolia], [Globularia nudicaulis], [Polygala chamaebuxus]. Small shrubs other than [Erica herbacea], in particular [Globularia cordifolia], may locally dominate communities. Distinctive formations also exist on siliceous and on serpentine substrates.
