| Preferred label | Icelandic lava flow moss heaths |
| Definition | Lava flows and lava fields of Iceland covered by continuous carpets of [Racomitrium lanuginosum] (c.f. unit E4.21), forming thick mantles that cover very large surfaces over all parts of the relief, engulfing asperities, bridging gaps, draping protruding rocks with large cushions, or else, in less evolved complexes, forming preferentially in the depressions and concavities where some organic matter accumulates. These moss heaths constitute a particularly original landscape of Iceland. |
