| Preferred label | Palsa mounds |
| Definition | Raised features of the palsa mires of the Palaearctic domaine constructed of peat around a permafrost core of ice and peat, colonized by ombrotrophic communities of dwarf shrubs, mosses, sphagna and lichens. They may take the shape of relatively low and flat ridges, 0.50 to 1.5 or 2.0 metres high, or higher domes, up to 8 metres in height. The first may be more characteristic of the continuous permafrost zone, the second of discontinuous permafrost zone where permafrost disappears under the mostly minerotrophic intervening hollows. |
