Concept: Submerged fucoids, green or red seaweeds (low salinity infralittoral rock) in the eunishabitats vocabulary

Concept URI http://eunis.eea.europa.eu/eunishabitats/A3.34
Preferred label Submerged fucoids, green or red seaweeds (low salinity infralittoral rock)
Definition Very shallow submerged rocky habitats in lagoons, subject to reduced or permanently low salinity conditions. These particular conditions lead to a variety of seaweed-dominated communities, which include fucoids and green filamentous species. The fucoids, more typical of intertidal habitats, penetrate into the subtidal under the reduced salinity conditions which are not tolerated by kelps.

Editorial note
  • There is a certain degree of duplication among some habitat classes in the EUNIS system coming either from BioMar or the Barcelona or HELCOM classifications. Therefore this means that all level 4 definitions (presently based on BioMar and Barcelona) should be checked, and given a new name if necessary. The biogeographic details are to be addressed in level 5 habitats.
