Definition	IUCN protected area management categories (2008) classify protected areas according to their management objectives. The categories are recognised by international bodies such as the United Nations and by many national governments as the global standard for defining and recording protected areas and as such are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation http://www.iucn.org/about/work/programmes/gpap_hom...
Methodology for obtaining data	There are three options available for informing why a site is not or cannot be assigned with an IUCN category: - not reported: The IUCN management category has not been reported. It is currently not available for the reporting but it may become available in the future. - not assigned: A protected area whereby the data provider has chosen not to use the IUCN management categories. This option addresses when IUCN categories are not meaningful at the site level. - not applicable: The IUCN management categories are not applicable to a specific national designation type. Examples of such designation types from the international level are Natura 2000 sites or World Heritage Sites. It is possible in the NOTES field to describe the reasoning for not assigning or not applying the IUCN code at the site or the designation type level, respectively.
