Name Municipal wastewater subject to primary treatment
Definition Municipal wastewater subject to primary treatment per year.
"Primary treatment" consists of temporarily holding the sewage in a quiescent basin where heavy solids can settle to the bottom while oil, grease and lighter solids float to the surface. The settled and floating materials are removed and the remaining liquid may be discharged or subjected to secondary treatment.
According to the Urban Waste Water Directive (91/271/EEC) primary treatment refers to treatment of urban waste water by a physical and/or chemical process involving settlement of suspended solids, or other process in which the BOD5 of the incoming waste water is reduced by at least 20% before discharge and the total suspended solids of the incoming waste water are reduced by at least 50%.
Methodology for obtaining data Volume of municipal wastewater treated by primary treatment expressed as a fraction of volume of treated municipal wastewater per year.
