Preferred label Sclerophyllous
Definition Sclerophyllous leaves are adapted to long periods of dryness and heat. The plants feature hard leaves, short internodes (the distance between leaves along the stem) and leaf orientation which is parallel or oblique to direct sunlight. The leaves are characterized by their relatively small, stiff and have a leathery or waxy coating, to reduce loss of moisture due to transpiration, in adaptation to dry and hot weather periods throughout the year.Sclerophyllous is not seen as a sort of leaf form and is not contrary to broad-leaved or needle-leaved. In fact, a plant can be sclerophyllous and broad- or needle (narrow) leaved at the same time. That is why it is handled here as stand-alone matrix element. Examples are cork oaks or olive trees.
