Name Designation type code
Definition A four character code linked to the legal or other effective means used by countries to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. The code consists of the two digit country code and a two digit numerical value.

The regional (sub-national) and national designation type codes are used in the Nationally designated areas (CDDA) reporting format, in the Natura 2000 Standard Data Form and in the Emerald Standard Data Form.

The international designation type codes are related to international obligations such as Birds Directive, Habitats Directive, Bern Convention, Barcelona Convention, World Heritage Sites, etc.

The codes are maintained in the Designation type code registry.

Only the national designation type codes are subject of the data definitions in Data Dictionary.
Methodology for obtaining data This value is required.

The national designation type codes are maintained by the countries on ad hoc basis and should be reviewed at least annually before the reporting of Nationally designated areas (CDDA).

In case a new designation type is to be added to the national list, the new code is decided by the country.

The national designation type code consists of:

- two-letter country or region code, as defined by the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard, except for Greece and United Kingdom where Eurostat country codes are used instead ("EL" and "UK" respectively)

- two numerical values starting with "00", indicating "No protection status", and ending with "99", indicating "Others".

The two-letter country or region code must match either the cddaCountryCode or the cddaRegionCode value.
