Name Designation type category
Definition The national designation type category (A, B or C) is a distinction of national designation types according to the aim of the designation type.
Methodology for obtaining data This value is required. When assigning the designation type category to a designation type, first consult the description of each category. Then please consider what is the primary aim of the designation type.

If it is the long-term protection of flora, fauna or habitats, category A or C should be assigned, depending on the status (legal or other) and the land ownership of the areas created by the designation type. Category A and C designation types include protected areas in line with the IUCN definition:
"A clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values."
Dudley, N. (Editor), 2008: https://portals.iucn.org/library/sites/library/fil...

If the primary aim is different but still providing an adequate protection for flora, fauna or habitats, category B should be assigned. Category B includes "other effective area-based conservation measures" (OECMs) as defined by the Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity in 2018:
"A geographically defined area other than a Protected Area, which is governed and managed in ways that achieve positive and sustained long-term outcomes for the in situ conservation of biodiversity, with associated ecosystem functions and services and where applicable, cultural, spiritual, socio-economic, and other locally relevant values."
https://www.cbd.int/doc/c/91c3/4484/ab24ef8c1ed10b...

OECMs can also count towards the protected area targets of the Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, if they fulfill certain criteria. OECMs are also expected to play significant role in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. It is therefore important to ensure their recognition and reporting, but it is also expected that further discussions will be required to ensure consistency across countries. This section will be updated accordingly in the future.

In addition to the A, B and C categories, the 'NA' (Not applicable) value is allowed for designation types with a code ending with '00' (No protection status) or '99' (Others). The '00' code is only used from the international level of e.g. Natura 2000 or Emerald reporting, when the relationship between the international designation and designation types at the national level is provided.
