Preferred label Reforestation
Definition Re-establishment of forest through planting and/or deliberate seeding on land classified as forest or already in forestry use. Includes planting/seeding of temporarily unstocked forest areas as well as planting/seeding of areas with forest cover. Includes coppice from trees that were originally planted or seeded. Excludes: natural regeneration of forest (FAO 2015). According to UN IPCCC´s LULUCF (Land Use, Land Use Change, Forest) reporting practices, a time interval of under 20 years can be used here as a threshold for “new” forest. Example: New planting of seedlings after a clear cut event on forestry used area for timber production, or after a storm damage event.
