Preferred label Hydrocarbon Compound
Definition Hydrocarbon compounds are artificial materials that are based on crude oil. They are the residues of refined mineral oil after extraction the more volatile substances. Sometimes mixed with mineral fragments (sand, gravel) they are used to on artificial surfaces like roads or roofs to seal and/or harden them, to make them impermeable. Practically, such surfaces can also have a natural origin, where mineral oil emerges by nature on the surface, combines with sands, and hardens out to some kind of natural asphalt, but those spots are very rare.
