| Definition | Height zones or altitudinal zoning in general is applied to give structure to the phenomenon that nature changes with increasing altitude in mountainous regions due to varying environmental and climate conditions. Factors like air temperature, air humidity, soil/rock composition, solar radiation, geographical aspect/exposure (azimuth) are important factors in determining altitudinal zones. Altitudinal zones therefore do not simply relate to absolute elevation or measurable height above sea level. On the same height about sea level, two different altitudinal zones can occur in the southern and northern exposure side of a mountain range. |
