Definition | Coppicing (de: Niederwald) is a woodland management measure of repeated cutting down of tree stems near the ground, generating regrowth of new shoots from the coppiced tree (stool). New shots are harvested in 3-50 year cycles, cycle length being dependent on species (e.g. willow, birch, hazel, poplar, hornbeam, beech, ash, alder, oak) and use of harvested wood (e.g. brushwood, charcoal, poles, withies for wicker-work, firewood, timber). This harvesting method is connected to short rotation forestry systems. |
