Definition Xerophile or xero-mesophile forests of [Quercus frainetto], [Quercus cerris], [Quercus petraea] and related deciduous oaks, of the subcontinental central and eastern Balkan peninsula, mostly of the xerothermal oak and hornbeam-durmast oak belts of Serbia and northern and central Bulgaria, in particular on the slopes of the Balkan Range and its associated hills and plateaux; irradiations extend into southern Romania. The associated flora has a marked southeastern European character and includes [Carpinus orientalis], [Fraxinus ornus], [Piptatherum virescens], [Paeonia peregrina], [Mercurialis ovata].
