Average Exposure Indicator
The Average Exposure Indicator expressed in ug/m3 (AEI) shall be based upon measurements in urban background locations in zones and agglomerations throughout the territory of a Member State. It should be assessed as a three-calendar year running annual mean concentration averaged over all sampling points established pursuant to Section B of Annex V of Directive 2008/50/EC.

AOT40c
AOT40 vegetation protection
Accumulated Ozone Exposure 40 (expressed in (ug/m3) XXX hours) means the sum of the difference between hourly concentrations greater than 80 ug/m3 and 80 ug/m3 between 1 May to 31 July using only the one-hour values measured between 8.00 and 20.00 Central European Time (CET) each day.

AOT40 vegetation protection averaged over 5 years
AOT40 vegetation protection (AOT40) averaged over 5 years. Following Directive 2008/50/EC: If the three or five year averages cannot be determined on the basis of a full and consecutive set of annual data- the minimum annual data required for checking compliance with the target values will be as follows for the target value for the protection of vegetation: valid data for three years.

The 8-hour running mean value for each hour is calculated as the average of the valid values for that hour and the 7 foregoing hours (averaging period). So- the averaging period of hour1 of dayn is hour17 of dayn-1 until hour1 of dayn. The averaging period of hour24 of dayn is hour16 of dayn until hour24 of dayn. A 8-hourly running averaged concentration is calculated if at least 6 valid hourly values are available.

Sum of Ozone Means Over 35 ppb
For quantification of the health impacts the World Health Organisation recommends the use of the SOMO35 indicator. SOMO35 stands for means the sum of the differences between maximum daily 8-hour running mean concentrations greater than 70 µg/m3 (= 35 parts per billion) and 70 µg/m3
